Why older people are more prone to falling

If you identify as a Wisconsin senior citizen, your risk of suffering a serious fall and related injury is far higher than that of someone much younger than you. Unfortunately, as you age, you develop a number of risk factors that make you far more likely to take a tumble. Because your strength, bone and muscle mass tend to decrease over time, you may be more likely to suffer a serious injury as a senior than you were in your younger years. At Hannula, Halom & Scherz, we recognize that one fall has the capacity to impact the rest of your life, and we have assisted many clients who suffered injuries because of someone else’s negligence pursue appropriate recourse.

While reports that environmental factors, such as icy sidewalks, wet store floors and insufficient lighting often pay a role in falls across all age groups, your risk of falling because of these environmental factors increases as you grow older. Why? For starters, your eyesight tends to diminish as you age, making it harder for you to spot obstructions in your path. As an older person, you are also more likely to take one or more prescription medications than younger Americans, many of which can lead to dizziness, imbalance and other side effects that can enhance your chance of falling.

If you are recovering from a surgical procedure, such as a hip-replacement procedure, this, too, can make you more susceptible to falling. Weakness, pain and discomfort all commonly follow surgery, and any of these conditions can affect the way you move and make you more likely to lose your balance.

While one of these risk factors alone can enhance your chance of a slip-and-fall accident, having multiple risk factors at play can further compound your chances of falling and suffering a potentially life-changing injury as a result. Find more about serious injuries on our web page.
