How can you stay safe from heat stress while at work?

If you work in construction in Wisconsin, you may know that during the hot summer months it can be exhausting working in the constant heat of the Sun. Failure to protect yourself and follow safety protocols can put you at risk of suffering heat-related illnesses that are otherwise preventable. Fortunately, when you take the time to learn about how you can keep yourself safe from the heat, you may be able to reduce your risk of suffering heat stress.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the most common heat-related illnesses include heat stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Often, if you are experiencing one of these illnesses, it is the result of spending prolonged time in the direct heat of the Sun. Here are some of the things you can do to stay safe:

  • Drink plenty of water all throughout the day. If you know you will be in an area that has limited access to water, plan ahead and bring plenty to drink.
  • If you have particularly strenuous jobs to complete, try and wait until cooler parts of the day to do this type of work.
  • Wear clothing that is suitable for hot temperatures. Breathable materials like cotton are ideal.
  • Be watchful for symptoms of heat stress including dizziness, headaches, shallow breathing and loss of coordination.
  • Take breaks as needed to refresh your body and give yourself a break from the heat.
